The UFO high bay earned its name from its distinctive round, disc-shaped housing — and it is common in shop environments for practical reasons. The compact form factor packs high lumen output into a fixture that hangs from a single mounting point, installs in minutes, and fits in spaces where a 4-foot linear fixture would not. For auto repair shops, home garages, woodworking studios, and fabrication spaces where ceiling obstructions (ducts, beams, door tracks, storage racks) leave irregular mounting opportunities, the UFO's point-source design slips into gaps that rectangular fixtures cannot.
The optical design is equally practical. A UFO shop light with a 120-degree beam angle distributes light in a broad circular pattern below the fixture, covering roughly a 15-foot diameter area from a 10-foot mounting height. The result is even, shadow-reducing illumination across the work surface — critical for tasks like reading gauges, inspecting paint finishes, sorting hardware, and any detailed work where shadows from overhead obstructions create visibility problems. At 140 to 160 lumens per watt, a single 150W UFO produces 21,000 to 24,000 lumens from a fixture that weighs 8 to 12 pounds and measures 14 to 18 inches across.
Not all UFO shop lights are built the same. Commercial-grade models feature die-cast aluminum housings with integrated heat fins, tempered glass or polycarbonate lens covers, IP65 ratings for dust and moisture protection, and UL/DLC certification. Residential-grade UFOs often use thinner housings, plastic lenses, and lower-rated drivers that may not survive the temperature swings, vibration, and moisture exposure common in working shops. For any space where the lights run 8 or more hours per day or where the environment includes dust, humidity, or temperature extremes, commercial-grade is the correct specification.

The number and wattage of UFO fixtures depends on three variables: floor area, mounting height, and target illumination level. For general shop work (50 foot-candles), plan for roughly 30 to 40 watts of LED per 100 square feet at a 10-foot mounting height. For detailed tasks (75 to 100 foot-candles), increase to 50 to 60 watts per 100 square feet. These rules of thumb work for typical rectangular spaces with light-colored walls and ceilings; dark surfaces, irregular layouts, or high racking reduce reflected light and may require additional fixtures.
UFO shop lights perform best at 10 to 25 feet. Below 10 feet, the fixture may produce a visible bright spot directly below with dimmer areas between fixtures — use wider beam angles (120 degrees or more) to mitigate this. Above 25 feet, the inverse-square law reduces light reaching the floor significantly — step up to higher-wattage models (200W or more) or reduce fixture spacing. Most UFO shop lights accept 120-277V input, making them compatible with both standard residential 120V circuits and commercial 208/240/277V service. A typical 150W UFO draws 1.25 amps on a 120V circuit or 0.63 amps on a 240V circuit. For multi-fixture installations on a single circuit, calculate the total amperage and ensure it does not exceed 80 percent of the circuit breaker rating (standard NEC requirement for continuous loads). A 20-amp 120V circuit can safely support up to 12 fixtures at 150W each — well beyond what most single-room shops require.
For a standard two-car garage (20 by 20 feet, 400 square feet), two 150W UFO LED shop lights provide approximately 50 foot-candles of general illumination — adequate for most garage activities. A three-car garage (30 by 20 feet, 600 square feet) typically needs three fixtures. For detailed work like auto painting, electronics repair, or woodworking, aim for 75 to 100 foot-candles by adding one additional fixture per 200 square feet. Mounting height matters — at 10 feet, a 120-degree beam UFO covers roughly a 15-foot diameter circle.
Wattage selection depends on ceiling height and required brightness. For residential garages and small shops with 8 to 12 foot ceilings, 100 to 150 watt UFO fixtures deliver excellent results. For commercial shops and warehouses with 15 to 25 foot ceilings, 150 to 240 watt models are needed to push enough light down to the working plane. For very high ceilings (25 to 40 feet), 240 to 500 watt industrial UFO high bays are required. A 150W UFO produces approximately 21,000 to 24,000 lumens — enough for 200 to 300 square feet of work area at typical garage mounting heights.
UFO shop lights are round, compact fixtures that mount from a single point (hook, chain, or pendant mount) and distribute light in a circular pattern below the fixture. Linear shop lights are elongated rectangular fixtures that distribute light along their length. UFOs are better for point-source applications where you want intense, focused light over a work area — engine bays, workbenches, CNC machines. Linears are better for uniform coverage along aisles, between racking, or in long, narrow spaces. Many shops use a combination of both types to get the best coverage.
UFO LED shop lights support multiple mounting methods. The most common is a hook or chain mount, where the fixture hangs from a ceiling hook or J-box. Many models also include a bracket for direct surface mounting (flush to the ceiling or beam). Some high-end models offer pendant mounts with adjustable drop lengths. For garages with exposed rafters or trusses, a simple S-hook or carabiner through the fixture's mounting bail gets the job done in minutes. All mounting hardware is included with our UFO shop lights — no additional purchases needed.
Many commercial-grade UFO LED shop lights support 0-10V dimming, which allows you to reduce output from 100 percent down to as low as 10 percent. This requires a 0-10V dimmer switch and two additional low-voltage control wires. Residential garage models may not include dimming capability — check the product specifications. For shops that need variable light levels (bright for detail work, reduced for general tasks or after-hours security), a dimmable UFO paired with a 0-10V wall dimmer provides the most flexible setup.
UFO LED shop lights generate significantly less heat than metal halide or HPS fixtures of equivalent light output. A 150W UFO LED produces roughly the same lumens as a 400W metal halide but generates less than half the waste heat. The aluminum die-cast housing acts as a heat sink, keeping the LED junction temperature within safe operating limits. Surface temperatures typically reach 130 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit at the top of the housing — warm to the touch but not a fire hazard. Keep the top of the fixture clear of insulation or combustible materials to allow normal heat dissipation.
Shop lighting should be selected by ceiling height, task type, fixture spacing, and required foot-candles. Our lighting team can help choose the wattage, beam angle, controls, and fixture count needed for even coverage across the work area. Call us at (800) 674-9420 or contact us online to get started.
