Building codes and adopted standards, including NFPA 101 and the International Building Code in many jurisdictions, often require emergency lighting for commercial and industrial occupancies. The requirement is straightforward: when normal power fails, emergency lighting must activate within 10 seconds and maintain a minimum illumination level of 1 foot-candle along the path of egress for at least 90 minutes.
In warehouses, manufacturing plants, gymnasiums, and other high-ceiling spaces, dedicated emergency light heads mounted low on walls often cannot provide adequate illumination across the full floor area. LED high bay lights with integrated battery backup solve this problem by using the existing high bay fixture — already positioned and aimed for optimal coverage — as the emergency light source. When power fails, the battery pack drives the LEDs at reduced wattage (typically 10–25% of normal output) for the required 90 minutes.
A battery backup high bay contains three components beyond the standard LED fixture: a rechargeable battery pack (typically lithium iron phosphate or nickel-cadmium), a charging circuit, and a transfer switch. During normal operation, the charging circuit keeps the battery at full charge from the building’s AC power. When AC power is lost, the transfer switch activates within 10 seconds and the battery drives the LED array at a reduced output level — enough to provide emergency egress illumination without draining the battery before the 90-minute minimum.
Most units include a self-test function that automatically exercises the battery on a monthly cycle and runs a full 90-minute discharge test annually, as required by NFPA 101 Section 7.9.3. Test results are indicated by an LED status light on the fixture — green for pass, red for battery replacement needed.
The battery pack, charging circuit, and transfer switch are factory-installed inside the high bay fixture housing. This is the cleanest installation — one fixture, one power connection, no external boxes. Built-in battery backup is the right choice for new construction and for retrofit projects where you are replacing the entire fixture. Most LED high bays we sell in this category use this configuration.
A separate battery pack that mounts near or on top of an existing LED high bay fixture and taps into its wiring. This is the right choice when you already have LED high bays installed and need to add emergency capability without replacing the fixtures. The add-on pack connects between the AC feed and the fixture’s LED driver, intercepting the circuit to provide battery power during an outage.
For spaces where full high bay coverage is not needed during an emergency — for example, when only egress paths need illumination — a lower-cost option is to install a few dedicated emergency battery backup fixtures or emergency exit signs alongside standard (non-backup) high bays. This is common in smaller facilities where the code only requires illumination of exit paths, not the entire floor.
NFPA 101 and the IBC require a minimum of 90 minutes of emergency illumination at no less than 1 foot-candle along the path of egress. This is the standard for virtually all commercial and industrial occupancies. Some jurisdictions or specific occupancy types (hospitals, high-rise buildings) may require longer durations. The fixtures in this category meet or exceed the 90-minute requirement at reduced emergency output.
Code requires emergency lights to reach operational illumination within 10 seconds of a power failure. LED battery backup fixtures meet this easily — the transfer switch activates in under 1 second and the LEDs are at full emergency output instantly. There is no warm-up delay as there would be with HID emergency fixtures.
Battery lifespan depends on chemistry. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries typically last 5–7 years. Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries last 3–5 years. Both types are affected by ambient temperature — batteries in fixtures operating in environments above 100°F will have shorter lifespans. Most fixtures include a status LED that indicates when the battery can no longer hold a 90-minute charge and needs replacement.
NFPA 101 Section 7.9.3 requires a 30-second functional test monthly and a full 90-minute discharge test annually. Many modern battery backup high bays include automatic self-testing that performs these checks without manual intervention and reports results via status LEDs. For facilities with many emergency fixtures, centralized monitoring systems can track test results across all units from a single panel.
Yes. Add-on (external) battery backup packs are available that connect to existing LED high bay fixtures without replacing them. The pack mounts near the fixture, taps into the AC feed, and provides battery power to the LED driver during an outage. This is a cost-effective way to bring existing fixtures into emergency compliance. Confirm that the add-on pack is compatible with your fixture's driver type and wattage before purchasing.
No. During emergency operation, the fixture runs at reduced output — typically 10–25% of its normal wattage. A 200W high bay might run at 20–30W in emergency mode. This produces enough light to meet the 1 foot-candle egress requirement while conserving battery for the full 90-minute duration. The exact emergency output varies by fixture and is listed on the spec sheet.
Battery backup high bays typically require an unswitched (always-hot) circuit — the fixture must have constant AC power to keep the battery charged, even when the normal lighting circuit is switched off. This usually means running a separate hot wire from a panel breaker that is not controlled by a light switch or occupancy sensor. A licensed electrician should verify the wiring configuration during installation.
Share ceiling height, fixture spacing, egress paths, voltage, runtime requirement, and testing needs so battery backup high bays can be checked against the facility plan.
