A 1500W metal halide parking lot fixture produces high initial lumens, but ballast loss, optical loss, warm-up time, lamp aging, and maintenance all affect the usable light on the pavement. Many replacements use 450W to 600W LED parking lot fixtures, but the right wattage depends on pole height, spacing, optic type, and target foot-candles.
Do not replace by wattage alone. Compare delivered lumens, distribution pattern, voltage, mounting style, surge protection, photocell or motion controls, and the condition of the existing poles and arms.
Retrofit kits can reuse an existing housing when the housing is in good condition and the project needs a lower upfront cost. The ballast usually has to be bypassed, and the housing must have enough space and heat management for the LED kit.
New LED parking lot fixtures usually provide better optics, cleaner installation, lower weight, and easier control integration. They are often the better choice when the old fixtures are damaged, poorly aimed, inefficient, or hard to service.
Confirm existing wattage, ballast draw, pole height, tenon or arm mount, voltage, fixture spacing, required light levels, local lighting rules, and whether photocells or motion controls are wanted. A photometric plan is the safest way to confirm that fewer watts still produce the needed coverage.
Older 1500W metal halide systems may produce roughly 90,000 to 120,000 lumens depending on lamp and fixture condition, but usable light changes with ballast loss, reflector condition, lens condition, dirt, and lumen depreciation. A 450W to 600W LED area light is a common comparison point, but pole spacing and fixture distribution decide whether the replacement is right.
Energy programs such as LEEP and other high-efficiency outdoor-lighting efforts helped push parking lot owners toward better controls, optics, and LED technology. A conversion should still check ballast bypass, surge protection, photocells, motion sensors, voltage, mounting arms, lift access, and whether the existing pole condition supports reuse.
L70 is a lumen-maintenance measure, not the moment a light dies. A lamp or fixture can still operate after it has lost a large share of initial output. Metal halide lamps may keep consuming high wattage while producing less useful light, and ballast or driver failure can happen before the lamp reaches its rated life.
Ballast bypass removes the old HID ballast from the circuit when a retrofit requires direct line voltage. That can reduce heat and remove one failure point, but the retrofit still has to fit the housing and manage heat. Full fixture replacement can reduce future lamp changes, lift rentals, employee time, and maintenance interruptions across a parking lot.
A 450-600 watt LED parking lot light is a common starting range for replacing a 1500W metal halide fixture. The exact LED wattage depends on fixture optics, delivered lumens, pole height, spacing, and target light levels. A 500W LED producing 70,000+ lumens may match the usable light from some 1500W metal halide systems after optical loss, ballast loss, dirt, and lumen depreciation are considered. Estimate savings against the actual fixture package and operating schedule.
Replacing a 1500W metal halide system with a 500W LED can save roughly 1,000 watts or more per fixture when ballast losses are included. Actual annual savings depend on system draw, runtime, utility rate, controls, and fixture count. Additional savings can come from fewer lamp changes, fewer lift visits, and reduced ballast maintenance.
Often, yes, but the pole, arm, foundation, wind load, and mounting hardware should be checked before reuse. Many LED parking lot lights use slip-fit or arm-mount hardware that can work with existing poles. Have a qualified professional verify pole condition for older poles, damaged poles, high-wind locations, or heavier fixture packages.
LED replacement fixtures carry product-specific rated lives, often tens of thousands of hours. Actual service life depends on driver quality, heat, surge protection, controls, cleaning, and operating hours. Compared with 1500W metal halide lamps, LED systems can reduce lamp changes, bucket-truck visits, and ballast maintenance when the fixture is matched correctly.
Share pole height, existing fixture type, voltage, mounting style, target light level, and site dimensions so the LED replacement can be matched correctly.
