A 1000W metal halide high bay has high initial output, but ballast loss, lumen depreciation, warm-up time, lamp replacement, and reflector loss reduce the useful light over time. Many high-ceiling replacements use 300W to 400W LED high bays, but the right answer depends on mounting height, spacing, beam angle, and target light level.
LED high bays direct more light toward the work plane than many older HID fixtures, so wattage is not the correct comparison by itself. Use delivered lumens, optic type, fixture spacing, and photometric results.
Full fixture replacement removes the old housing and ballast and installs a new UFO or linear high bay. This usually gives the best optics, efficiency, driver reliability, and control compatibility.
Retrofit kits or LED lamps can reuse some existing housings, but compatibility, heat, ballast bypass, socket condition, and fixture listing need to be checked. Retrofits may be useful when the housing is sound and budget is the primary constraint.

High bay replacements for 1000W metal halide are often used around 25 to 45 feet, depending on the building and task. Motion sensors, daylight controls, 0-10V dimming, and aisle optics can improve performance when matched to the space.
1000W metal halide and HPS fixtures were used in airports, seaports, sports fields, cranes, mining sites, warehouses, schools, gyms, and industrial buildings. Because HID light is omnidirectional, reflectors and fixture condition have a major effect on usable light at the work plane. LED high bays direct light more efficiently, but the beam angle and fixture spacing still have to match the ceiling height.
Important conversion checks include hook mount, chain mount, bracket mount, pendant mount, voltage, wiring, ballast bypass, mounting height, blind spots, spacing, beam angle, color temperature, and whether to use a new UFO or linear high bay instead of a retrofit kit.
Metal halide lamps consume high wattage and produce heat while their light output declines over time. A 1000W HID system may also include ballast draw, so actual energy use can be higher than the lamp wattage. LEDs reduce energy consumption when selected correctly, but fixture count and spacing still matter.
High bay replacements should be checked for ceiling height above 10 feet, work-plane brightness, beam angle, blind spots, and wiring. A 300W or 400W LED high bay may replace many 1000W metal halide fixtures, while very high ceilings may need higher wattage or narrower optics. The conversion should compare installation labor, fixture weight, hook mount, bracket mount, and control compatibility.
A 300-400 watt LED high bay light replaces a 1000W metal halide fixture. The 1000W metal halide produces approximately 110,000 initial lumens but loses 30-40% to ballast loss and optical inefficiency. A 400W LED high bay producing 55,000-65,000 lumens matches the usable light output while consuming 60% less energy. Higher-efficiency models at 300W can achieve the same replacement with even greater savings.
Replacing 1000W metal halide (plus ~150W ballast = 1150W total) with a 400W LED saves 750 watts per fixture. For a fixture operating 16 hours per day at $0.12/kWh, annual energy savings are approximately $525 per fixture. A warehouse with 50 fixtures saves over $26,000 annually in energy alone, plus eliminating costly re-lamping labor and lift rental fees.
You have two options: full fixture replacement or lamp-only retrofit. Full replacement involves removing the old fixture and installing a new LED high bay (best light quality and efficiency). Lamp-only retrofit uses an LED corn bulb or retrofit kit that fits into the existing fixture housing after ballast bypass. Both options work, but full replacement typically provides better optics and longer warranties.
LED high bays that replace 1000W metal halide are designed for mounting heights of 25-45 feet. At 25-30 feet, a 300W LED high bay provides excellent coverage. At 30-40 feet, 400W models support adequate foot-candle levels. Above 40 feet, higher wattage models (480W-600W) or additional fixtures may be needed. A photometric study optimizes fixture count and placement for your specific ceiling height.
Share ceiling height, fixture spacing, voltage, current lamp type, target foot-candles, and control needs before choosing a replacement wattage.
