1500W metal halide high bays are used in large warehouses, manufacturing plants, aircraft hangars, distribution centers, and indoor sports spaces with very high ceilings. LED replacements are often in the 480W to 600W range, but fixture efficiency, optic type, mounting height, and target foot-candles decide the final selection.
Metal halide systems also include ballast draw, warm-up time, lamp aging, and lift-based maintenance. LED high bays can reduce energy and maintenance, but the project should be checked with fixture data and operating assumptions rather than a blanket savings claim.
Full fixture replacement is usually the cleanest path for 1500W high bay conversions because it removes the ballast, old reflector, old socket, and aging housing. It also allows better optics, driver selection, dimming, and sensor compatibility.
Retrofit kits can be considered when existing housings are structurally sound and the project needs to control upfront cost. Confirm fit, heat management, ballast bypass, listing, and service access before choosing a retrofit.

Payback depends on fixture cost, labor, utility rate, operating hours, ballast wattage, maintenance cost, and available rebates. Use the existing fixture count and schedule to model savings, then verify that the LED layout meets the required light level and uniformity.
1500W metal halide lamps were used in stadiums, sports fields, large warehouses, hangars, manufacturing plants, and other very high-ceiling spaces. They offer strong initial output, but they also bring ballast draw, heat, warm-up time, fixed color temperature, lamp aging, and lift-based maintenance. LED replacements are often selected around 480W to 600W, but the project should be checked by delivered light and layout.
Conversion planning should compare retrofit kits with full fixture replacement, then confirm lumen output, mounting height, beam angle, spacing, voltage, driver access, controls, and emergency or sensor needs. ROI should be modeled from operating hours, utility rate, fixture cost, installation labor, maintenance cost, and available rebates.
Metal halides were popular because they produced bright white light with acceptable color rendition for many large spaces. Their limitations are easier to see now: high energy consumption, heat, lamp depreciation, warm-up delay, fixed color temperature, and recurring lamp replacement. LEDs provide more fixture and color-temperature options, but the layout still drives the result.
For a 1500W high bay conversion, compare 450W, 480W, and 600W LED options against actual mounting height and required illumination. The fixture may be a UFO high bay, linear high bay, or retrofit kit. Consider lumen output, quality of light, driver access, dimming, emergency needs, and whether the facility wants to maximize energy reduction or maintain a higher light level.
A 480-600 watt LED high bay light replaces a 1500W metal halide high bay fixture. The 1500W metal halide produces approximately 155,000 initial lumens but effective output drops to 90,000-100,000 lumens after optical and ballast losses. A 600W LED high bay producing 80,000-90,000 lumens provides equivalent usable light at 60% less energy with far better lumen maintenance over time.
1500W metal halide high bays are found in large industrial facilities with ceiling heights of 35-50+ feet including warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, aircraft hangars, and indoor sports arenas. These extreme-height applications require high-lumen fixtures to achieve adequate foot-candle levels at the work surface. LED replacements excel in these environments due to stronger optical control and directional light output.
Converting from 1500W metal halide to LED high bay is straightforward. For one-to-one fixture replacement, the new LED fixture mounts to the same hook, chain, or pendant as the old fixture. Electrical connection is simplified since LED fixtures run directly on line voltage (no ballast). Most conversions can be completed by a licensed electrician in 30-60 minutes per fixture including removal of the old unit.
ROI is exceptionally strong for 1500W to LED conversions. Replacing a 1500W metal halide (1700W with ballast) with a 600W LED saves 1100 watts per fixture. At 16 hours per day and $0.12/kWh, annual savings are approximately $770 per fixture. With fixture costs of $400-$800, payback is typically under 1 year. Eliminate re-lamping costs (each 1500W MH change requires a lift and $100+ lamp) and the savings compound rapidly.
Share ceiling height, current fixture count, operating hours, voltage, target light level, and mounting method so the LED replacement can be selected carefully.
