LED recessed lights sit in or near the ceiling plane so the room stays visually clean. They are used for general lighting, task lighting, wall washing, accent lighting, corridors, kitchens, offices, retail spaces, and hospitality interiors.
The first choice is fixture format. Existing can housings may use retrofit modules or LED bulbs. New ceilings may use new-construction cans, remodel cans, wafer lights, or canless fixtures. Commercial grid ceilings may use panels or troffers rather than round downlights.
Common round sizes include 4-inch, 5-inch, and 6-inch fixtures, with larger commercial sizes used in higher ceilings. Baffle trims reduce glare. Smooth trims give a clean appearance. Gimbal trims aim light toward art, displays, or walls. Wet-location trims are needed for showers and some covered outdoor ceilings.
Check IC rating where insulation may touch the housing. Confirm dimmer compatibility, ceiling depth, spring clips, junction box access, and whether the fixture needs emergency backup or 0-10V control.

Spacing depends on ceiling height, beam angle, lumen output, room use, and whether the goal is general light or accent light. 3000K is common for warmer residential and hospitality spaces. 3500K to 4000K is common for offices and commercial interiors. 5000K may fit task-heavy areas where a crisper appearance is preferred.
Recessed lighting is built around the light source, housing, and trim. The housing sits above or within the ceiling and contains the electrical connections. The trim is the visible ring or aperture and may be smooth, baffle, reflector, gimbal, wall-wash, or wet-location rated. Retrofit modules can update existing cans, while wafer and canless fixtures are useful where ceiling depth is limited.
Use recessed lighting for general room light, wall washing, accent lighting, kitchens, corridors, offices, reading rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, retail spaces, and hospitality areas. Compare fixture size, beam angle, CRI, color temperature, dimming, IC rating, airtight rating, wet rating, and whether the ceiling can be accessed for service.
Recessed lights may be 2 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch, 6 inch, 8 inch, or larger depending on room size and ceiling height. Smaller apertures can look more architectural and work for accent lighting. Larger apertures provide more general light. Brightness is measured in lumens, while color temperature describes the white tone of the light.
Beam angle describes where the light is concentrated. Wide beams spread light for general illumination, while narrow or adjustable trims can highlight art, counters, signs, or wall features. Recessed lighting can make a room feel less cluttered because the fixture is hidden, but spacing still has to prevent dark spots, glare, and uneven light.
LED recessed lighting includes several fixture types: can lights (round, 4-8 inch), troffers (2x2 and 2x4 rectangular panels), slim panels (ultra-thin for tight ceiling spaces), and retrofit kits that convert existing recessed housings to LED. Each type serves different ceiling configurations and aesthetic requirements for offices, retail spaces, healthcare facilities, and residential applications.
For residential and small offices, 4-inch and 6-inch round recessed lights are most common. For commercial offices and retail, 2x2 or 2x4 troffers provide broad, even coverage. Ceiling height determines spacing: in 8-9 foot ceilings, space 4-inch fixtures every 4-5 feet and 6-inch fixtures every 6-8 feet. A general rule: spacing should be 1.0-1.5 times the ceiling height for even illumination.
Yes, LED recessed lights can be retrofitted into most existing ceiling types. For drop/suspended ceilings, 2x2 or 2x4 LED troffers drop directly into the grid. For drywall ceilings with existing recessed cans, LED retrofit kits snap or screw into the existing housing. For new installations in drywall, remodel-style LED recessed fixtures use spring clips to mount without attic access.
Most of our LED recessed lights support dimming via TRIAC, ELV, or 0-10V protocols. Dimmable recessed lights allow you to adjust brightness for task lighting, ambient mood lighting, and energy savings. For best dimming performance, use a dimmer switch rated for LED loads — older incandescent dimmers may cause flickering. Many of our commercial troffers support 0-10V dimming for smooth, flicker-free adjustment.
Confirm ceiling depth, can size, trim style, IC or wet rating, dimming method, color temperature, and room use before ordering.
