A Lighting Designers Trip to Disneyland - Lighting Critique of the Magic Kingdom

LED Lights
As a lighting designer your brain is always thinking lights, lighting and now LEDs. So when we took the kids to Disneyland last week, I spent as much time looking at lights as I could while being raced from ride to ride. My short takeaway is how poor the lighting. Mainly from the complete lack of energy efficient lighting, but also from a design standpoint. I saw more incandescents and lights on during the day than I have ever seen. Disneyland needs me. (hint, hint call me)
In fairness to Disney, I researched it and Disneyworld is about to go energy neutral with a large solar install by 2019. Its west coast sibling Disneyland, not so much though. Even California Adventure got a few solar panels, but not many. None of the parks appear to be using LEDs to cut that usage. Our energy rates in California start at .23 a kilowatt hour, highest rates in the country. Disneyland is probably in Southern California Edison territory and unless they have a secret deal, their energy is expensive. Going LEDs in California has a very fast pay off, often 2-3 years with labor included.
